A bus carrying over 70 people plunged off a bridge into a polluted ravine near , resulting in at least 51 deaths, including children. The accident occurred early Monday morning after a multi-vehicle crash.

The bus, which was traveling from Progreso, northeast of the capital, fell approximately 115 feet into sewage-polluted waters. It was partially submerged and upside down.

Response and Investigation

President Bernardo Arévalo declared a day of national mourning and deployed the army and disaster agency to assist in rescue efforts. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the accident.

Initial findings suggest the bus, which was 30 years old, may have been overloaded with passengers. The driver lost control, leading to the tragic incident.
