The joins six global institutions in preserving the Lord Howe Island stick insect, once thought extinct for over 80 years, by providing suitable living conditions for this flightless giant.
This species, also known as the , is native to a remote Tasman Sea archipelago, with its population decimated by rats introduced in 1918.
Breeding and Future Plans
Following the discovery of surviving specimens in the 1960s, two pairs were brought to for breeding, essential for the species' survival.
The Prague Zoo has implemented strict care measures, including an air-conditioned building and disinfection protocols, aiming to eventually reintroduce the insect to its natural habitat on .
