Coalition Formation
Pro-European parties in have agreed to form a coalition government, aiming to exclude far-right nationalists from power. This coalition includes the leftist Social Democratic Party (PSD) and center-right parties.
The coalition's formation comes after the far-right outsider 's unexpected lead in the first round of presidential elections, which sparked allegations of electoral violations and Russian interference.
Presidential Election Annullation
Romania's Constitutional Court annulled the first round of the presidential election, a move unprecedented in the country's history, citing the need for a rerun due to alleged Russian meddling.
The new coalition has not yet decided if Georgescu, under investigation for his campaign, will be eligible to run in the re-scheduled presidential election, which is expected to take place in early 2025.
