Response Efforts
Nearly 9,000 firefighters, police, and civil servants, along with 120 helicopters, were mobilized to combat the wildfires across five regions, achieving containment of all but four blazes by Monday morning.
The government declared a state of emergency in Ulsan city and South and provinces, with acting prime minister urging full efforts to evacuate residents and safeguard firefighters.
Impact and Casualties
The wildfires, ignited by a lawn mower and grave tributes, have consumed over 1,464 hectares in Sancheong and nearly 17,000 acres in Euiseong, causing significant damage to property and forests.
Four civil servants and at least two firefighters lost their lives, with hundreds evacuated and over 162 buildings, including a temple, damaged. The fires have also affected highway sections, disrupting transportation.
