Lawmaker Accusations
Rep. Rashida Tlaib accused of planning to implement surge pricing using facial recognition technology, which she claims could lead to discriminatory pricing and hardship for families.
Tlaib's concerns were echoed by Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Bob Casey, who previously warned Kroger about the potential misuse of digital price tags and facial recognition for dynamic pricing.
Kroger's Response and Technology Details
Kroger, denying allegations of surge pricing, stated that its use of electronic shelving labels (ESLs) aims to lower prices for customers, not increase them.
Microsoft clarified that Kroger is not currently using its facial recognition technology, distancing itself from past pilot programs that tested such technology.
